Saturday 8/8/2015 (Kouchi Practice)

Our dojo is Budo KL and our judo club is KL Judo. We are primarily a competition club although recreational players are welcome.

Our competitors all wear the Fighting Films Superstar 750 judogi with our dojo and club logos embroidered on the sleeves.

These are really good looking judogis as you can see. KL Judo is the official distributor of these premium judogis in Malaysia.

Some players arrive well before the official session starts to get in some extra competition training. Here, Shen and Aunter do some drills involving two-types of ura-nage and ogoshi. Notice the use of crash pads. This is something we believe in strongly.

Today's class is pretty small with just four players on the mat. Some players are injured, some out of town, some preparing for exams. But as long as you have a minimum of two players, you can train. And what an awesome training it was for us tonight.

The main technique the players worked on was the kouchi-gari. I taught them three major versions. The skipping kouchi made famous by Neil Adams; the kouchi-gake made famous by Hirotaka Okada and also regularly used by France's David Larose; and kouchi-makikomi a very common throw used in combination with ippon-seoi-nage.

First, I showed the players how to do kouchi-gari from a kenka-yotsu situation (skipping kouchi & kouchi-makikomi).

Then I showed them how to do kouchi from an ai-yotsu situation. Normally in such a situation, kouchi is done as a gake, not gari.

After a hard workout, we had a nice dinner. Since Sven is going off soon, we decided it would be his farewell dinner! :)
